The Writing Life in Provence
The Writing Life in Provence
Bonjour et Bienvenue! I'm Jenny.
In 2021, I quit my career, got (rescued by) a dog, sold everything, and followed my dreams to live, learn, and write in the South of France. Along the way, I created hexagon home for sharing inspiration, hard truths, and helpful hints for anyone who's ever wondered what it takes to reinvent your life. Now happily married and living in the heart of Aix-en-Provence, I'm finally working on my first full-length novel.
You can think of this site like a private French flea market, where you'll discover a trove of worn-velvet personal essays, tucked among pretty postcards of architectural remnants and "la vie quotidienne" in Provence. Browse our collection of bureaucratic flaming hoops, humor, fine whines, travel advice of questionable value, and other junk you never knew you needed.
Tchin-tchin!,
Jenny, Sophie, & Vincent
Remember being bored?
I've never been a Type-A, gotta-go, hobby-heavy person, but I did grow up as an "achiever". I got my first part-time job at 14 and earned 4 degrees with honors. As an adult, it took me a very long time to let go of the guilt I associated with surrendering a healthy day to quiet daydreams, messing with a poem, or even reading a new novel.
Now, FREE time is my most valuable asset. I'm one of those weirdos who can happily stare at a wall for 45 minutes. Especially when the wall is sun-dappled crumbling plaster, overrun with flowering vines, and I have a glass of wine in hand. Which is partly why I ended up in Provence in the first place. In the US, one of the worst four-letter words you can call someone is lazy; in Provence, slow living is an artform.
After I turned in my manuscript to my editors last month, I had a month of hands-off time while four people shred my story structure down to its studs. The period culminates with an 8-hour online review TOMORROW. Meanwhile, I've had an abundance of time on my hands, and I've felt as productive as a tomato field in ICE territory.
