For 25 years, I designed memorable spaces for some of America's biggest homebuilders, banks, and corporate aviation clients.
Despite the sparkling highlights, I rarely described myself as happy. It took a global pandemic and a painful depression before I decided my LIFE needed a remodel. In 2021, I began planning the craziest, scariest, hardest, and absolute BEST do-over ever. I quit my job, adopted a dog, sold everything, and moved ... in with my parents. Hey, first things first, ok? The planning (and saving) phase took over a year, but Sophie and I officially made the leap from North Carolina to Aix-en-Provence in May 2022, and haven't looked back since.
Along the way, I built hexagon home for sharing hard truths and helpful hints for anyone who's ever wondered what it really takes to reinvent your life.
Jenny Van Stone is a creative writer, perpetual student, and "recovering" Interior Designer. A Pennsylvania native, Jenny lived and worked in San Diego, Philadelphia, Charleston, and Charlotte, NC, before making good on her long-cherished dream of moving to France. Now an Aix-based newlywed, she is still buried beret-deep in visa documents, semi-rejected business plan ideas, and a bunch of gumption. Mom to one adorable, rambunctious, ever-hungry four-legged problem child, Jenny is thrilled to share her wide, witty, and sometimes-wise perspectives on starting over and finding yourself ...right where you left it.
Mainland France's borders roughly form a hexagon, giving her the nickname, "l'Hexagone". As an interior designer, making people 'feel at home' was quite literally my job, but how will living abroad change the vibe of my hive? The hexagon home project will explore the layered meanings and mystique of coming home. I'll illuminate the process behind finding a place to live in France, and find out what native style-makers believe makes home in the hexagon so special.
Sophie is a mystery mutt! Presumed to be a Feist --a terrier breed uncommon outside of the American South-- Sophie was likely a young victim of abusive breeders. Jenny drove 4 hours to meet this frightened but sweet girl at Castoff Pet Rescue in 2021, and it was love at first sight. Although Sophie is still slow to trust strangers, she is always eager to please, and wakes her mom with grateful kisses every day. Sophie relishes belly rubs and her home-based job as chef supervisor and assistant dish washer. Sophie is still working on her French accent.
No spam. No sales. No scrolling! Just newsworthy notes on designing a life in France.
